William Cobbing (b. 1974)

Lives and works in London

Coming from a sculptural sensibility, William Cobbing’s practice encompasses a diverse range of media, including video, photography and installation. Clay is a central material in his work, both in its raw and fired forms, which he explores through the act of writing. This is echoed in his glazed ceramic book covers in which tactile surfaces and the pooling of glazes take precedent over the contents. His Cover Version series, started in 2016, includes a wide variety of titles, among them Kenneth Goldsmith’s Wasting Time on the Internet (2016), Chris Kraus’s I Love Dick (1997), Ursula K. Le Guin’s Planet of Exile (1966) and Ed Ruscha’s Various Small Fires and Milk (1964). His ceramic book covers, the artist says, echo both ‘tablet computers and Bronze Age clay tablets, exploring the tactile interplay between image and text.’
