In Dreambox of Another Kind, Rees continues his ongoing exploration of marbling, a technique often associated with artisanal bookmaking and the decorative arts. These conceptual works are imbued with a subtle subversion of aesthetic hierarchies which is typical of the artist's work. Rees’ marbled pieces emerge from a process that resists precise control. Due to the chance nature of the marbling techniques he employs, there is a high degree of unpredictability embedded within the resulting artworks. Patterns that form incidentally on the surface of the work are enhanced through the artist’s careful addition of pencil, charcoal, or crayon. Abstract compositions suggest waves, mountains, seaweed, or rock formations, evoking the landscape of Wales where the artist grew up, whilst avoiding direct representation. These pieces are intentionally modest in size, defying the convention of large-scale abstract painting.
In this presentation, Rees deliberately engages with themes of folk art and craft practices. Extra emphasis has been placed on way these works are framed, referencing both traditional Adirondack-style frames with crossed corners and the geometric motifs of Welsh blankets. These conceptual framing choices signal an acknowledgement of craft traditions, repositioning them within the context of contemporary abstract painting.
