David Batchelor is one of the most celebrated and influential British artists of his generation. For over three decades, he has explored our experience of colour within the modern urban environment and examined the shifting cultural and historical attitudes toward colour in Western culture. His multifaceted practice spans painting, drawing and photography, as well as sculpture and large-scale installations, all unified by a sustained investigation into the luminosity, structure and emotional charge of colour in contemporary life.

Batchelor’s work is held in international public and private collections, including Tate, London; The Arts Council Collection; The Saatchi Gallery, London; UBS Art Collection; The Government Art Collection; Soho House London; MAC, Santiago, Chile. He has exhibited at the MoMA, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Tate Liverpool; Gagosian, London; White Cube, London; Lisson Gallery, London; Waddington Custot, London; Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK; Hauser & Wirth, Zurich; Canopy Collections, London; Cecilia Brunson Projects, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Lima; Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh; South Bank Centre, London; Turner Contemporary, Margate; Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, and Biennal de Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2022, he had his first museum retrospective in the UK at Compton Verney, titled David Batchelor: Colour Is.
