Steven Cox creates abstract oil paintings that foreground materiality and mark making. Over the past decade, he has developed a distinctive process in which layers of thick oil paint are transferred onto canvas using plastic sheets. Influenced by the built environment, graffiti and defaced surfaces, his work draws on the traditions of colour field painting and abstract expressionism. Spray paint is frequently used alongside traditional oil paint, resulting in surfaces that are synthetically vibrant and richly tactile.
Cox’s work is held in international private and public collections, including Ernesto Esposito Collection, Naples; Collection VR d’Affaux, Paris; Lepsien Art Foundation, Germany. He has exhibited at Halsey McKay Gallery, New York; Canopy Collections, London; A Hug From The Art World, New York; Galerie Jerome Pauchant, Paris; Annarumma Gallery, Naples; Galleri Benoni, Copenhagen; Saatchi Gallery, London; Scott Lawrie Gallery, Edinburgh; Rarity Gallery, Mykonos; Galerie Derouillon, Paris.
