Steven Cox creates abstract oil paintings, focusing on exploring materiality and mark making processes. Over the past decade, Cox has developed a distinctive and unique painting process characterised by transferring layers of thick oil paint onto canvas using plastic sheets. Influenced by a fascination with the built environment, graffiti, and defaced surfaces, his paintings reference the traditions of colourfield painting and abstract expressionism. Spray paint is frequently used alongside traditional oil paint, resulting in surfaces that are synthetically vibrant and compellingly tactile.
Cox’s work is held in private collections in the UK, USA, Germany, France, Austria, Australia, Canada, The Netherlands, Japan, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden and The Faroe Islands. He has exhibited with Halsey McKay Gallery, New York; A Hug From The Art World, New York; Galerie Jerome Pauchant, Paris; Annarumma Gallery, Naples; Galleri Benoni, Copenhagen. Cox has been featured, reviewed and profiled in Modern Painters Magazine, ArtNews, ArtInfo, Wall Street International, Copenhagen Contemporary, Art F City, Dust Magazine, and others.
