Sunsets, horizons and soft evening light are evoked in paintings by Richard J. Butler and Sarah Lederman while Lara Davies’ abstract works call upon vintage interiors and sun-bleached patterns. The geometric formalism of James William Murray’s unique works on paper enters into dialogue with Irvin Pascal’s richly textured canvases, in which the diversity of patterns refers to geometric arrangements, musical compositions and hints of his local built environment. The urban experience is also present in the abstract and colourful Chromoscape series by David Batchelor, as well as in Thomas Cameron’s large figurative paintings which depict scenes the artist has captured with his camera while wandering through the city. This collection also includes references to the landscape, which are viewed through the lens of abstraction in the organic and earthy compositions of Benedikte Klüver’s paintings, William Stein’s poetic pastel dreamscapes and Aethan Wills’ reinterpretations of Japanese gardens. References to the body can be found in Ellie MacGarry’s paintings of bathers and in her iconic series of hand paintings, which are echoed by the finger like forms stretching around Celeste’s highly crafted copper vessel. Conceptual yet sensual, new marbled paintings by Dan Rees accentuate and embrace the element of chance in abstract composition. These works are produced with a carefree spirit, with the hand of the artist bearing little responsibility over the outcome of the painting, as in Ian Whittlesea's delicate works. Made without brushes, using only sprayed pigment to combine the seven colours of the spectrum, his works appear like a glowing white cloud that recalls light and its myriad hues.
