Richard J. ButlerA Brief History of the World: Rock, Ocean, Earth, Life
£4,000
pastel and acrylic on marble
2024
21.5 x 80 x 2.5 cm
Drawing inspiration from ancient art and mythology, Richard J. Butler’s alluring paintings skirt the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Constructed of intricate surfaces built up in layers of grated pastel, acrylic gel and paint, his work often depicts figures and landscapes that seem to dissolve within vast colour fields.
This piece is from a body of work made in August 2024, while Butler was on residency at La Chapelle Saint-Antoine in Naxos, Greece. These four softly-geometric objects were created by gradually applying pastel dust to fragments of pure white Naxian marble left behind by a previous resident. These marble works are miniature sculptures formed through material layering and accumulation.
