Ian Whittlesea’s work is concerned with words and the ability of text to transform the physical and psychic state of the viewer. His candle smoke works were inspired by Trataka, a yogic practice of concentration honed through staring at the center of a candle flame. Requiring minimum intervention from the hand of the artist, they convey both a meditative and intimate approach to art making.
