Emmet Kierans’ figurative paintings use characters and objects from the popular imagination as embodiments of collective desires and aspirations. His works are characterised by a visual language which is soft yet precise and feature imagery drawn from film stills, advertisements and publicity shots. Paintings of clothing and accessories act as a bridge between the imaginary world of film stars and everyday reality. Items such as leather gloves, shoes and silk shirts are carefully reproduced in oil paint to indicate the signifiers of sophistication and desire.
