Anastasia Lopoukhine works across pen and ink, charcoal drawing and collage. Often drawing from memory, her works depict characters from her childhood, which function as prompts to help her recall the funny, grotesque and strange nature of everyday encounters. This drawing is a portrait of a friend of the artist, who after a dinner party told a story about her mother’s tendency to over-prepare snacks for short flights. She recalled one occasion where her mother had packed a whole rotisserie chicken and several bunches of bananas in her backpack. Lopoukhine has paid homage to these items in the material of the cushion on which her friend rests in this portrait.
