Anastasia Lopoukhine works across pen and ink, charcoal drawing and collage. Often drawing from memory, her works depict characters from her childhood, which function as prompts to help her recall the funny, grotesque and strange nature of everyday encounters.
Lopoukhine started working on this drawing on a train while traveling from Moscow to St Petersburg. The motif of the fish is inspired by the way in which passengers were packed into the busy carriages 'like sardines'. The artist recalls how her fellow passengers would stop and linger to watch her drawing as they passed her on the train.
