Anastasia LopoukhineThe First and Last Sip (Diptych)
Anastasia Lopoukhine works across pen and ink, charcoal drawing and collage. Often drawing from memory, her works depict characters from her childhood, which function as prompts to help her recall the funny, grotesque and strange nature of everyday encounters.
This diptych explores the contrast between drunkenness and sobriety. What does the first sip of a martini feel like compared to the last? The recipe for the perfect martini has long been contested. Shaken or stirred? Lopoukhine has included her answer in The First Sip: shake in the general direction of Italy. The Last Sip was made by using an ink-soaked ice cube in place of a paint brush, creating and effect that mimics the bleary view of the world after one too many martinis. The inspiration for this piece came from Dorothy Parker’s iconic line: “I like to have a martini, Two at the very most. After three, I’m under the table, After four, I’m under my host.”
