Anastasia Lopoukhine works across pen and ink, charcoal drawing and collage. Often drawing from memory, her works depict characters from her childhood, which function as prompts to help her recall the funny, grotesque and strange nature of everyday encounters.
In this work, Lopoukhine set out to depict two contemporary witches. The artist reflects on the way that long-lasting female friendships can seem confusing to men; historically, a gathering of women has frequently been framed as witchcraft. Through this drawing, she imagined what modern-day witches might look like—no broomsticks or wands required—and what mischief they might get up to with their pet fly and frog.
Unframed.
